Not really. There's no such thing as "Sub Forums" under the regular phpbb, and the mods that create that ability are far too complicated for me to add (especially with all the other mods I have installed).

If you're looking to downgrade complexity, you could always ditch the Cool Thing that replaces "guys" with "dudes"
